About the 2014 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE 2.0)
NSSE collects information at hundreds of four-year colleges and universities about student participation in
activities and programs that promote learning and personal development. Few tools offer parents a reference to see
how colleges shape and educate students. NSSE is valuable because it provides parents with a way to see how and what
students are learning compared to their peers at other schools. NSSE results provide an estimate of how undergraduates
spend their time and what they gain from attending their college or university.
NSSE provides feedback on High Impact Practices (HIPS)
that help students develop employer-desired skills like critical
and creative thinking, problem solving, teamwork, personal and social responsibility, and appreciation for diversity.
In 2014, Winthrop senior NSSE respondents reported higher rates of participation in undergraduate research,
internships, service learning and culminating senior experiences compared to their national peers. To compare

Winthrop uses its NSSE results to evaluate global learning, community service, and civic engagement initiatives. NSSE
results help the University evaluate learning associated with Winthrop’s
University Level Competencies
and the quality of relationships Winthrop students report with other students, faculty members, and campus professionals
in academic student support services.
