Sculpture Concentration
The discipline
of sculpture has
expanded enormously over the last fifty years to include a diverse
range of processes, materials and concepts. As such there has never
been a more exciting time to study and practice sculpture. The
sculpture program at Winthrop is designed to introduce students to both
traditional and contemporary ways of making sculpture. The program
emphasizes the development of technical, creative and cognitive skills
through an energetic hands on approach to creating sculpture. The
program is committed to graduating students who have a wide range of
skills and level of professionalism that will make them highly
competitive as they enter the work force as creative specialists.
Students will develop significant skills in metal, wood, mold making,
plaster, concrete. They will also develop skills in digital imaging,
video, installation and in the planning, design, construction and
installation of public art. These skills are critical as the field of
Public Art provides students with very sustainable, profitable career
opportunities.
The studio is spacious and well equipped and allows for the production
of a wide range of creative work. Visiting artists, field trips,
internships and special community based projects and exhibitions keep
the program current and challenging. Students are served by a
professionally active faculty focused on providing each student with
the tools to be a significant artist. Student learning and a
depth of
experience is at the heart of the program and as such student successes
have been numerous. Recent graduates have been awarded scholarships to
Graduate level study at Syracuse University, Carnegie-Mellon University
and Clemson University. Other have chosen to move to New York and
Chicago to create and exhibit work, simultaneously finding employment
in the discipline of sculpture. Student work commissioned by the
University is installed across the Winthrop University campus and in
the new academic buildings. Students have been recognized by ISC
(International Sculpture Center) in their Outstanding Student Awards,
Artists Residency awards and in national and regional sculpture
competitions.
