Visual Communication
Design
The broader term for Graphic Design, Interactive Media and Illustration
tracks is Visual Communication Design (VCD). It is important
to distinguish between the three disciplines that VCD refers to the
larger field of study of communication culture. The goal of the program
is to develop not only excellent production designers, but also Art Directors,
Creative Directors, Project Managers, and other positions that control
the conceptual and organizational portions of creative projects. The
focus of VCD has shifted to develop principle decision makers toward
design solutions rather than decorators of printed materials and media.
Students need to understand problems in communication from the users
perspective and the clients they serve. This approach to design is formalized
and intrinsic to the process and professional practice here at Winthrop
University.
Graphic Design
Projects involving graphic designers include: the design of typefaces;
page layouts for magazines and books; product and packaging design; corporate
identity systems; environmental signage; multi-media and presentation graphics;
web-page design; and other areas involving every facet of visual communications.
Graphic Designers are responsible not only for how information is presented,
but how it is perceived by the viewer. This may involve informational, promotional,
and commercially-oriented means. The designer acts as a liaison between a client
and the public; his or her job is to be sure a specific message is delivered
effectively and efficiently, in a manner that is visually sophisticated.
