Costume Designer and Associate Professor of Theatre
(Make-Up, Costuming, Introduction to Production,
History of Dress and Décor)
Janet Gray,
a native Texan, received a B.A in Liberal Arts from the
University
of Texas at Austin. While working at an "entry level" position in
the Houston
corporate world she became interested in the theatre and returned to
school to take some classes. She never looked back. Five years later
she had a B.F.A. in Theatre from Stephen F Austin State University,
Nacogdoches,Texas and an M.F.A. in Costume and Set Design from
Tulane
University,
New Orleans, La.
Ms. Gray served
as Resident Set and Costume Designer at New Stage Theatre in
Jackson, Ms. for ten seasons where she designed for over 75
productions. She has designed for Theatres and Theatre Departments
in North Carolina,
Missouri, Mississippi and Louisiana.
She also taught
costuming for two years at what is now Truman State University in
Kirksville, Mo. and has held master classes in Costume Design at
Milsaps College in Jackson, Ms.
Since 2000, she has spent her
summers as Assistant to the Resident Costumer Designer at Flat Rock
Play House which is the state Theatre of North Carolina. Among her
work there was co-designing Disney's Beauty and the Beast in 2004
and Children of Eden in 2005. She also designed The Gin Game, Always, Patsy Cline,
Dames at Sea and several youth Theatre productions for the
Playhouse.
