  • Stephanie Byars
    '94 / Riverview, FL
    Since graduation:
    A talented graphic artist, Byars worked for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. She was a soccer fanatic, and an activist in the Lance Armstrong Foundation. She was a dedicated volunteer who helped animals in need. Byars passed away in July 2007. Steph was one class away from her MBA in E-Business when she passed. University of Phoenix awarded her the degree posthumously in 2007.

    Since graduation:
    I started Silver Pail Pottery with my business partner, who also happens to be my mom. We are going into our third year in the business and growing steadily. We are doing craft shows, placing our work in galleries and have built both a fully-functioning web site and new home studio. Our biggest success to date is our recent arrangement to have our work used on the sets of the show Army Wives.

    I was hired in August of 2001 to teach visual arts at Spring Valley in Columbia. I quit my job at Toys R Us, moved to Columbia and started teaching a week or so later. I can’t think of a better job than teaching art all day. I work rather consistently on my own work, primarily monotypes. I really don’t show or sell any of them, so I have a rather large pile of work accumulating in my house.

    Worked on the Excellence III, a mega-yacht that spends its summers in the Med and its winters in the Caribbean; Volunteered at the Exploratorium and the Headlands in San Francisco, CA, built koi ponds around Atlanta, GA and currently finishing up art school in Pittsburgh.

    I have had a studio at Redux Contemporary Art Center in downtown Charleston for the past three years where I create my one of a kind silver objects as well as commissioned pieces for clients. I exhibit my work nationally and internationally on a regular basis. Additionally, I am a part-time professor at the Art Institute of Charleston.

    Upon graduation I moved to Murrells Inlet and taught photography and general arts education courses at Conway High School and then at Coastal Carolina University. I have consistently exhibited my work; since retiring last December, I have been working on landscape-derived projects usually requiring images in series.

    I have worked in a couple of print shops and done some traveling. I traveled to Iceland in 2004. I now live downtown Charleston, where I am employed as “pressman” for the Post and Courier newspaper. I have artwork in a small gallery in Charleston, “The Limeblue” and spend my free time with my friend Kevin Morrissey. We are setting up our own screen printing shop.

    In '97 I accepted a position at the Museum of York County, and in '01 accepted the position of Curator of Art at the SC State Museum, and was named Chief Curator of Art in 2002, where I continue to work. Since '06 I have been teaching a course on SC Art History as an adjunct professor at USC. I have continued to exhibit in the Carolinas and Georgia, and am represented by Hampton III Gallery.

    I started teaching Visual Arts at Rollings Middle School for the Arts in Summerville, SC and have had artworks in regional exhibitions. I am still teaching at Rollings Middle School for the Arts where I passionately guide artistic opportunities for young student artists. I am currently in the process of writing my thesis for a Master in Arts, Arts Administration at Winthrop University.

    I have been working in Arts Administration, beginning first with an Internship experience through the NC Arts Council in September 2000. I worked then as the Visual Arts Director at a small local arts council before taking the position of Director of Programs and Exhibitions at Artspace in Raleigh in July 2002. This fall I will be starting graduate studies at Duke University.

    I taught elementary school for four years. I have also worked for the Gibbes Museum of Art and the Children’s Museum of the Low country teaching education programs. I am currently working on illustrating a children’s book and having another fun summer teaching camp. This fall I will begin graduate school at Drexel University working towards a master’s degree in Creative Arts Therapy.

    I moved to Brooklyn shortly after graduation. I’ve worked quite a few jobs, ranging from set design to art handling to artist’s assistant jobs. The majority of my time has been spent working as a fabricator in the studio of Tom Sachs. I make my own work at a work/live space in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and show at English Kills Art Gallery, a rather raw and homespun gallery, also in Bushwick.

    I was head of the art department at Huntingdon College in ‘46, East Tennessee State College in ‘53, and Madison College in ‘68. I was one of the major founders of OASIS Coop Art Gallery in Harrisonburg VA in 2000. I have held various instructor positions beginning with Winthrop University in ’38, Chapman College in ’67, James Madison University in ’83 where I teach now.
