Preparing for Ed: The Art and Artifacts of
Edmund Lewandowski - Precisionist
Rutledge Gallery
As both a
precisionist painter and an art educator,
Edmund Lewandowski played a leading role in
the development of American modernism. The
former chair of the Department of Art and
Design at Winthrop from 1973 – 1984, he was
committed to Winthrop students and the
surrounding community. “Preparing for Ed:
The Art and Artifacts of Edmund Lewandowski
– Precisionist” will bring together
artifacts donated to the university by Ed
and his wife Dolores that exemplify his
inspiration as an artist and give a glimpse
into his life. This exhibition is in
preparation for the first major
retrospective exhibition of Lewandowski’s
artwork coming to Winthrop fall 2010. Titled
“Edmund
Lewandowski:
Precisionism and Beyond”
and organized by the Flint Institute of
Arts, Winthrop University Galleries will
host the inaugural opening for this
traveling exhibition on Monday, Sept. 6,
2010.
