Sonya Clark:
Material Reflex
Rutledge Gallery
/
Rutledge Building
“Material Reflex”
explores Clark’s symbolic and innovative
interpretation of materials and weaving
processes as a reflection of personal and
cultural identity. Drawing from her
African-American, Scottish and Caribbean roots,
Clark takes seemingly common objects such as a
piece of cloth or a strand of human hair and
transforms them into historical commentary,
challenging the viewer to embrace the subliminal
context. Clark is currently the chair of the
Department of Craft/Material Studies at Virginia
Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia
and most recently was recognized as a United
States Artist Fellow.

Christine
Kirouac: Siren Fall
Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Gallery
Rutledge Building
Canadian artist,
Christine Kirouac’s work
explores the "performance" of ethnicity and
identity through lenses of cliché, storytelling,
mimicry and popular culture.
Kirouac’s videos and installations move
between enigmatic acts of personal
revelation and social observation,
blending elements of cinema, theatre
and documentary.
“Siren Fall” captures young Canadian
girls interpreting military fashion through
the filters of suburbia.

“SelvEDGE”
Nava Lubelski
Rutledge Gallery
/
Rutledge
Building
Lubelski embroiders on used fabric over
stains and rips, contrasting the accidental with
the meticulous, constructing narrative from
randomness and mistake. Her hand-stitched
designs combine traditional sewing techniques
and abstract painting which remove the object
from functional purpose and elevate to art.

Libby O’Bryan
Elizabeth Dunlap
Patrick Gallery
Rutledge Building
O’Bryan’s artwork is
informed by her
previous career in apparel production and
current work as an “industrial seamstress.”
She explores the relationship between maker,
machine and consumer. The environments she
creates act outside the commodity driven
marketplace as a means for contemplation
about everyday decisions and cultural norms.
