Distinguish Yourself at Winthrop and Beyond
Winthrop University’s Distinction in Leadership program enriches the
college experience by developing and enhancing leadership skills for
highly talented and motivated students. Students design and create a
leadership development portfolio to complement their academic and
career goals. This program creates a community of learners who
pursue leadership opportunities while acquiring, sharpening, and
using new leadership skills.
Distinguishing
Features
The Winthrop University Distinction in Leadership Program is one of
the university’s most exciting interdisciplinary offerings. The
program is not a major or a minor, but a didactic, experiential, and
reflective program that develops leadership skills. The Distinction
in Leadership program emphasizes the live, learn, lead philosophy of
Winthrop University.
Distinction Requirements
Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA average in all classes related to
the Distinction in Leadership Program and must not be placed on
academic or disciplinary probation.
LIVE Component
Serve in leadership positions and participate in trainings within
the Winthrop Community
Integrate a service learning project related to the major
Complete a Winthrop University international academic experience
(optional)
LEARN Component
Complete a personalized leadership development plan
Complete the LEAD required courses
Take approved leadership courses or contracted hours relating to the
major
Write and present a leadership reflection/proposal
Distinguishing Results
Students will have an enhanced knowledge and understanding of
specific leadership theories, concepts, and models, preparing them
for leadership responsibilities in their careers, in their
community, and in the world.
Specific learning objectives:
Self-knowledge: Become aware of the beliefs, values, attitudes, and
emotions that motivate one to seek change and transformation
Authenticity/Integrity: Maintain consistency between one’s actions
and values and beliefs
Commitment: Incorporate passion, intensity, and persistence
Empathy: Put oneself in the other person’s place to effect
collaboration, build trust, and resolve differences in viewpoint
Competence: Employ the knowledge, skills, and technical expertise
required for successful completion of any group
leadership effort
Ethical and Social Responsibility: Operate within an ethical values
system that recognizes the connections among leadership, social
responsibility, and the needs of the community
