Undergraduate Scholars Day
Students who engage in undergraduate research during their
college careers and/or presented their scholarship are
honored.
2012-2013
The second annual
Scholars Day
will be held Saturday, April 20, 2013, 9a.m.-noon at Tillman
Hall and will include the Honors Colloquium from 9-10a.m.,
Honors Poster Session from 10-10:30a.m., ONCA Ceremony from
10:30-11a.m., and Undergraduate Research Celebration from
11a.m.-noon. During the Undergraduate Research
Celebration we will recognize the student scholars and their
faculty mentors for their scholarly endeavors. University
College willl also present the 2013 Book Of Abstracts.
(Students and faculty will receive copies of the book.) The
guest speaker wil be Matthew Horn who received his Bachelor of
Science degree in biology with a minor in chemistry from
Winthrop University in 2012 and is now a student at the
University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel
Hill.
2011-2012
The first annual university-wide Scholars Day was held in
McBryde Hall on April 21, 2012.
2010-2011
The Ninth Annual Undergraduate Research Reception will be held
in McBryde Hall on April 23, 2011.
The guest speaker will be
Dr. Joseph Michael Ellis.
Dr. Ellis received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science
from Winthrop University in 2003 and went on to receive his
Master of Arts and PhD in Comparative Politics and
International Relations from Temple University. He is
currently an assistant professor in the Department of
Political Science and History at Wingate University in
Wingate, NC.
2009-2010
The Eighth Annual College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate
Scholars Awards Ceremony and Reception was held on April 24,
2010 in McBryde Hall.
Dr. Sarah Lageman, former Winthrop graduate,
was the keynote speaker. Lageman graduated from Winthrop in
1997. She received a BA in Psychology with a minor in Social
Sciences and Biology. She received her Ph.D. at the University
of Florida and spent a couple of Post-Doc years at the Mayo
Clinic. She is now on faculty and a researcher at Emory
University.

The Sixth Annual College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate
Scholars Awards Ceremony and Reception will be held on April
26, 2008 in McBryde Hall.
This year's speaker will be
Nancy Lamontagne,
Winthrop alumna, Editor of
Biophotonics International
magazine, and Managing Editor of
Photonics Spectra
and
EuroPhotonics magazines. Mrs. Lamontagne
graduated from Winthrop in 2000, with dual degrees in Biology
and Science Communication. She was Editor-in-Chief of
The
Tattler in 1998-1999, Managing Editor of
The
Johnsonian in 1999-2000, and winner of
The Herald's
news writing contest for 1999-2000. She was also a member of
Beta Beta Beta, the national Biological honor society.
Biophotonics International is a
magazine targeted mainly towards biologists. It covers
light-based technology used for medical and biological
applications. It has a circulation of over 30,000
subscribers, 1/3 of which reside outside of the U.S.
Photonics Spectra provides worldwide
coverage of the photonics industry and reaches over 100,000
readers.
Europhotonics is a bimonthly
magazine that covers European photonics products and research,
with a circulation of around 27,000 European readers.

The Second Annual College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Scholars
Awards Ceremony and Reception was held on
April 30, 2004 in the Tuttle dining room (McBride 101) from 2pm to 3pm.
Students who engage in undergraduate research during their
college careers are recognized as Undergraduate Scholars in
the College of Arts and Sciences. (The full list of students
