Sustainability is generally defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations.  Therefore, sustainability is to simultaneously advance economic vitality, ecological integrity, and social welfare.

Winthrop is a signatory of the Talloires Declaration and is an institutional member of the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE), the Carolinas Recycling Association (CRA), and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
