Sustainability & Winthrop University . . .

Sustainability is generally defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations.  Therefore, sustainability is to simultaneously advance economic vitality, ecological integrity, and social welfare.   Winthrop University is committed to sustainability and to serving as a positive example through sustainable practices.

Winthrop is a signatory of the Talloires Declaration and is an institutional member of the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE), the Carolinas Recycling Association (CRA), and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).

When we talk about sustainability, we are talking about the future.  Everything we do has an impact and to what extent that impact has on the future is the ultimate consideration.  What we do today does impact future generations therefore, we must ask ourselves what will the quality of life be for our great-grand children’s future in regards to economic vitality, ecological integrity, and social welfare.

For more information about Winthrop University's commitment to sustainability, contact the Sustainability Coordinator.
