Beyond Academics: health preparedness for your student

“When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot become manifest, strength cannot fight, wealth becomes useless, and intelligence cannot be applied.”

Herophilus of Chalcedon, 335-280 BCE, Physician to Alexander the Great

Most of you attended orientation with your student, reviewed the academic reputation of the university, checked on class sizes, inquired about financial aid and toured the residence halls. You tasted the food, looked into campus security and wanted to know about the social activities on campus. Sometimes very basic needs like health care are missed.

How many students came to campus prepared to deal with health problems without your presence? Many students, overwhelmed with their new found freedoms and testing new behaviors are unaware of the dangers these new behaviors might cause.

If your student needs health care in the community, would he or she know what to do?

Does your student have health insurance, a copy of the insurance card, and the knowledge to use it? Does your insurance policy cover your student out of your home area or state? Does the insurance require pre-approval? Does the policy cover only full-time students? Does the insurance cover prescriptions? Does the policy require co-payment? About 25% of all college students have no medical insurance. I would guess most of the 75% that do have coverage don’t know the answers to the above questions because they have never had to navigate the health care system on their own until now.

Don’t overlook preparing your student for potential health needs! You may be prepared at home but now campus is home, Mom/Dad are not just across the hall. Students on campus will get aches and pains just as they did at home. Health Service staff are here to help, but many times students find comfort in using products that worked for them at home.
