R.A.D.

What Is It And How Can It Help?

Winthrop University Campus Police provides many program opportunities to our students.  However, the most intriguing and beneficial program for our female students has to be our R.A.D. program.

R.A.D. is an acronym for Rape, Aggression, Defense.  This is a 12-hour self defense course offered by the Campus Police Department to our female students.

R.A.D. was founded in 1989 by Lawrence N. Nadeau and was developed to enhance the defense options available to women.  It is also the only self-defense program endorsed by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators.

R.A.D. teaches women the basic fundamentals of physical defense through classroom instruction, technique demonstration, hands-on training, and the use of strong verbal commands.

The class is taught by three of our seven certified instructors over the period of three nights.  On the last night of class, there is a controlled simulation.  Instructors and students are placed in padded suits to perform the defense techniques they have learned.

Campus Police will offer the course on September 5, 6, and 7, October 2, 3, and 4, and November 6, 7, and 8. The class will also be offered three times during the spring semester.  There is a $25.00 registration fee required. However, upon successful completion of the class, we return the $25.00 registration fee.  If for some reason, the student registers and fails to attend or complete the class, the registration fee is forfeited to Campus Police and the money is used to purchase equipment for our R.A.D. program.

Registration for all classes can be done at Campus Police located in the Good Building, 526 Myrtle Drive.
