Using Animals for Individual Faculty/Student Research |
| |
Winthrop faculty and student who conduct research using
vertebrate animals need to complete the Animal Study Protocol
Review form (IACUC001)
and any additional schedules that apply to the research.
This includes animals used on or off campus, and animals in
field studies.
|
|
Using Animals in the Classroom |
| |
If you teach a class in which students use vertebrate animals
for classroom exercises or for individual research projects,
complete the Classroom Study Form (IACUC002).
This should only be used if you know the type of projects
that will be conducted and the types of animals that will be
used. By signing the Classroom Study Form, you are indicating
that you are acting as the "principal investigator" and you are
taking responsibility to educate the students on the proper way
to use the animals (See Animal Welfare Act and Appropriate
animal use guidelines) and that you will monitor the student
projects for compliance. You are also responsible for having the
students complete a Student Research Project form (IACUC002S)
that you will keep on file and make available to the IACUC upon
request. The Classroom Study Form is submitted academic
year - one form for Fall, Spring and Summer sessions.
A student conducting research that is not covered by the
approved Classroom Study protocol, must complete the Animal
Study Protocol Review form (IACUC001),
and receive IACUC approval before beginning the research. |
|
Submission Process and Approval |
| |
The Animal Study Protocol Review form (IACUC001)
must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the start of the
research in order to ensure approval, and can be submitted at
any time throughout the year.
The Classroom Study form (IACUC002)
must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the start of the
research, and can be submitted at any time throughout the year.
You are encouraged to submit the form at the start of the
semester for the semester in which the research will be
conducted in order to ensure adequate time for review and any
necessary revisions and resubmission.
