Policy Title
Summer Session Teaching
Policy Description
Primary Goals of Teaching in Summer Session:
 1. To offer courses with high student demand and need
 2. To provide support to faculty over the summer term
 3. To provide an equitable distribution of summer teaching opportunities for faculty
 4. To manage university budget considerations

Teaching assignments during summer session are offered in anticipation of course demand. The department chairs in consultations with the deans will determine final course selection, course delivery mode, and course scheduling.

Appointments:  Eligibility to teach in a summer session is determined by the college dean in conjunction with the department chair.

Teaching Load:  In general, faculty will teach no more than 6 hours during summer session, including Maymester. Exceptions to this policy will be made only under unusual circumstance. The appropriate dean must approve all exceptions.

First-time Internet courses may have lower class limits. However the capacity for future sections of the course will be consistent with traditional classroom capacity.

This policy is designed to ensure that faculty have sufficient time to engage in necessary scholarly acitivity and professional development and to maintain the same quality of instruction during the summer as is expected during the regular academic year.

With the approval of the Office of Academic Affairs, individual colleges may develop additional policies to supplement this university-wide document.
