Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition
The mission of the B.S. in human
nutrition is
to provide students with
the foundation knowledge and skills needed for entry level positions in human
nutrition, admission to graduate school, or acceptance into supervised
practice (internship) experiences.
Three degree
options:
Program
goals - The
B. S. in Human Nutrition will prepare
1. graduates with the comprehensive background needed for successful
completion of supervised practice experiences, entry-level positions in
human nutrition or graduate school.
2. competent entry-level human nutrition professionals functioning in a
variety of practice settings in South Carolina and throughout the nation
.
3.
students with skills needed to remain current with advances in human
nutrition, and recognize the necessity for lifelong continuing
professional development.
4.
students with skills needed to work with diverse groups of people.

Human Nutrition
Each option requires
students to complete nutrition and related courses such as biology,
chemistry, psychology, economics, and mathematics. The Didactic
Program in Dietetics (DPD) prepares students for accredited dietetic
internships and careers as registered dietitians. The Food
Systems Management option prepares graduates for entry level
management positions in the food service industry. The Nutrition Science option is a pre-professional program
to prepare students for graduate school and admission to medical, dental
and pharmacy schools.
In addition to
completing the required program coursework, students must complete
Touchstone (general education)
Program requirements. The
Touchstone program of study is designed to provide students with a wide range of educational
experiences and exposure to various disciplines.
Regardless of academic
performance, students completing the DPD requirements at Winthrop
University are not guaranteed acceptance into a dietetic internship.
