Didactic Program in Dietetics

Mission Statement

The mission of Winthrop University's didactic program in dietetics (dietetics option), is to prepare graduates for supervised pre-professional practice programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE), and, for entry-level positions after successfully completing an accredited internship and the national credentialing examination for Registered Dietitians.

Measurable Goals and Outcome Measures for Winthrop University'a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD)

1.0 The program will produce graduates with the comprehensive background needed for successful completion of supervised practice experiences and the registration examination.

 

1.1 Seventy-five percent of students who complete the DPD and apply to supervised practice                       programs will be accepted within three years of graduation.

 

1.2 Eighty percent of graduates will pass the RD exam on first administration

 

1.3 Sixty percent of students entering the DPD as juniors will complete the DPD within three years

 

1.4 Seventy-five percent of internship directors will rate DPD graduates as good to excellent.

2.0 The program will produce competent entry-level dietitians functioning in a variety of practice settings in South Carolina and throughout the nation

 

2.1 Seventy-five percent of employers will rate DPD graduates as prepared for entry-level positions

 

2.2 Eighty percent of graduates will pass the RD exam on first administration.

3.0  The program will prepare students to effectively use resources and apply research principles to investigate and resolve issues related to the dietetics field.

 

3.1 One hundred percent of DPD graduates will have the ability to use computers for nutrient analyses, word processing, electronic spreadsheets and basic statistical analyses

 

3.2 Seventy-five percent of employers responding to the survey will agree that DPD graduates can effectively use resources and apply research principles to investigate and resolve issues related to the dietetics field

 

3.3 Seventy-five percent of DPD graduates responding to the survey will agree that they can effectively use resources and apply research principles to investigate and resolve issues related to the dietetics field

4.0 The program will prepare students with the skills needed to remain current with advances in dietetics and related fields, and recognize the necessity for lifelong continuing professional development.

 

4.1 Sixty percent of DPD students will join and participate actively in the Student Dietetic Association

 

4.2 Seventy-five percent of students who complete the DPD and apply to supervised practice programs will be accepted within three years of graduation.

Accreditation  

Winthrop University's Didactic Program in Dietetics and Dietetic Internship are currently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA), 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, Illinois 60606-6995, 312/899-0040, ext. 5400. 

Winthrop University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), as noted on page four of the 2008-2009 Undergraduate Catalog.

NUTR 340 A/C Policy on Expenses: Students enrolled in NUTR 340A/C are responsible for any expenses incurred such as, but not limited to, travel to off campus sites and professional attire, liability insurance and/or immunizations required by practice sites. 

Process to become a Registered Dietitian (RD)    

Must have or complete:

1.      a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university

2.      a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) verification statement from a CADE- accredited institution

3.      a supervised practice program from a CADE accredited institution

4.      the registration dietitian credentialing examination with a satisfactory grade

5.      RD-enrollment fee payment to the Commission on Dietetic Registration
