The Modern Languages Learning Center, also known as the "Language Lab," is located in 307 Kinard and is available to Modern Languages students and instructors for teaching, learning, and practicing foreign languages.  Consisting of a classroom and a conference room, the Language Lab gives students and instructors access to state-of-the-art multimedia equipment, computers, and software in a language-focused environment.

After an extensive planning period and with numerous contributions, the Language Learning Center officially opened on June 17, 2002 with a ceremony honoring the South Carolina Cable Television Foundation for its contributions.  With these contributions, the old language lab was upgraded to accommodate for the rapid changes in technology and education.

Affected by this upgrade were rooms 307 and 311 in Kinard Hall, which now house modern language classes taught in the most innovative ways recommended by educators. As part of the renovations and upgrades to the site, old speech booths were replaced with networked computers linked to a control room staffed by lab assistants and a teacher station in each room.  Lab assistants and instructors can now show their screens to individuals or groups of students using the existing local area network, listen to students speaking, and assist groups in the language learning process.

Description of facilities:

The classroom (Room 307) is designed for teaching classes or for use as an open lab for Modern Language students.  It has 24 multimedia-capable PCs and an instructor station, all of which are equipped with flat panel displays, DVD drives, international keyboard layouts, and internet access.

The conference room (Room 311) is designed for small classes, faculty-meetings or as a presentation room.  It offers the same equipment as the classroom but in a more open setting for classes and small groups.  It has 9 multimedia-capable PCs and an instructor's station.

In addition, both rooms are equipped with a Worldwide VCR, a CD/DVD player (all of which can be projected), as well as a high quality sound system device.  Some multimedia equipment is available for faculty to check out for use in class.  If you are interested in seeing what is available for faculty use, please check the AV Resources page.

The Language Lab is staffed by Dr. David Kleinberg, the Language Lab Director, along with several Lab Assistants. They will be glad to help the students out during operating hours (posted on the bulleting board outside the lab or by checking the Lab Schedule online).
