Scholarship Application
The
following is a list of scholarships currently available for students in the
Department of Modern Languages:
The Helen Kesler Beckham Memorial Endowed Scholarship:
Established in January 1993 by Georgie D. Beckham, Winthrop Class
of 1932, this is a permanent endowment fund created in memory of her daughter
Helen Kesler Beckham, Ph.D., a respected educator and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of
Duke University 1963, to provide financial assistance for one or more students
at Winthrop University.
This scholarship will be awarded with preference given to a
high-achieving student at the end of the second year of study, a resident of
South Carolina, a foreign language major and consideration may be given to study
abroad for the summer between the Junior and Senior years.
This scholarship is renewable for the fourth year. (Approx. $1250.00)
The Helen K. Bussell Scholarship:
Established by the late Mrs. Bussell.
Awarded to a rising senior who has a superior scholastic record and who
is majoring in modern languages. (Approx. $1500.00)
The John Guilbeau Scholarship:
Established by friends and colleagues of Dr. John
Guilbeau, Professor of French, on the occasion of his retirement from Winthrop.
(Approx. $100.00)
The Lawrence D. Joiner Scholarship:
Established by his wife, Elizabeth Joiner, in memory of Dr. L.D. Joiner,
professor of French and Dean of Continuing Education. Awarded to a rising
junior or senior or to a Winthrop faculty member for travel abroad to study or
do research in the humanities.
Special consideration given to study and research in foreign languages and
literature. (Approx. 800.00)

There are
other scholarships available through honorar societies such as Pi Delta Phi (French honorary), Sigma Delta
Pi (Spanish honorary), Société des Professeurs de français et
francophones d'Amérique (for 6 weeks summer study at Laval or Montréal
Universities), Rotary Scholarship, Woodrow Wilson Scholarship,
