Winthrop students interested in
participating in Model United Nations may register for
PLSC 260:
The United Nations. The class, offered only
in the spring semester, concentrates on the organization and
procedures of the United Nations. Currently taught by
Dr. Chris Van Aller, the class is extremely popular among all
Winthrop students regardless of major. The students
prepare for participation in Winthrop's Model United Nations
Conference, traditionally held at the end of March. The
class requires no prerequisites and satisfies three general
education requirements including; Oral Intensive
Communication, Social Science, and Global Perspectives.
The conference is the culmination of the class, bringing
together college delegates with High School teams.
The Winthrop Model UN Conference is
unique in that the program combines the participation of
college students and high school students.
Students enrolled in PLSC 261 serve as committee chairs
during the conference. After participating in PLSC 260
(a prerequisite for 261) students often continue their Model
UN participation through this course and their involvement in
The Secretariat, This one hour credit course focuses on
committee chair development and conference planning.

final exam. It may be taken twice for credit.
