MASS COMMUNICATION INTERNSHIPS FOR CREDIT

Broadcast and Journalism

All broadcasting and journalism majors are strongly encouraged to complete at least one supervised internship for credit. In addition to your degree, employers want evidence of professional experience, preferably through two or three internships. And about two-thirds of all internships lead to a job offer at the place of internship.

Students must seek their own internships after consulting with their academic advisers.

The internship process begins with the academic adviser and application to the department to qualify for an internship. This is a one-page form available on this site and in the department office.

After the student has been certified as qualified for an internship, she or he may pursue an internship that the academic adviser has deemed appropriate for the major. When the internship has been agreed upon by the internship on-site supervisor and the academic adviser, the contract can be completed. Internships require approval by the student, on-site supervisor, faculty adviser, department chair, and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences followed by registration in the course and fee payment for the credit.

Deadlines for internship applications are:

Because Internships are expected to provide meaningful professional experience related to one’s major, not all proposed internships will be approved. In addition to gaining approval for internship sites, students must meet the following academic requirements:

  • Completion of MCOM 241 with a C- or better
  • Six hours from MCOM 325, 331, 333, 341, 342, 343, 345, 346, 347, 348, 370, 377, 410, 425, 441, 446, or 471 with a C- or better in each course.

After a student is approved for an internship, a contract must be completed between the student, the employer, and Winthrop University. In order for academic credit to be given for the internship, a record of the student’s progress must be kept. Specific guidelines will be set up in the internship contract, but minimum requirements include:

  • Filing a weekly report to your internship faculty adviser showing the work you have completed
  • Completing a final report that summarizes, reviews and analyzes the internship experience no later than 10 days after completing the internship
  • A confidential evaluation by the employer of the student’s work and ability to the internship faculty adviser
