Health Insurance Coverage
Is Strongly Recommended:
1. While affordable primary
care is available through Student Health Services, many students may require
more expensive treatment at community providers, such as hospitalization,
specialty care, or other services not available on campus. Students are
responsible for payment of charges for their health care.
Health care can be
very expensive, and payment for care for a single illness or injury may
interfere with a student’s ability to meet their academic goals.
2.
All students are strongly encouraged to have adequate health insurance
coverage.
3. Students, not covered
under the Winthrop University-sponsored student plan, should verify that:
(a)
their health insurance coverage will remain in force while they are students at
the
Winthrop University;
(b) determine how to access covered health services
while they are away from home; and,
(c) how to submit claims and obtain
assistance from their carrier. Students should have
health insurance cards in
their possession at all times.
The Winthrop University
Sponsored Plan:
Students who need coverage should consider the University-sponsored
student plan. The Winthrop University-sponsored plan is a partially insured
student health plan, procured through the State Materials Management Office, and
made available for use to Winthrop University and six other state colleges and
universities.
Eligibility Criteria:
Eligible
Winthrop University students may purchase coverage for themselves. Eligibility
criteria are as follows:
a.
Undergraduates: Enrolled in a degree program
and taking at least six (6) semester hours.
b.
Graduate Students: Enrolled in a graduate degree program; taking
at least one graduate level course; and making appropriate progress toward
graduation.
