Health Services
Mission Statement
Winthrop University Health Services is
designed to provide confidential, professional, quality, cost-effective, acute
and routine medical care for all enrolled
Winthrop
University
students.
The staff of Health Services is committed in obtaining
optimum personal health for each student through services and programs provided.
Location and
Hours of Operation
Health Services is located on the second floor
of the
Crawford Building.

Medical Services
are provided by a team that includes
certified and licensed nurse practitioners, registered and licensed nurses,
pharmacists, registered pharmacy technicians, and registered laboratory
technicians. Walk-in services and appointments are available from 8:30AM
to
4:00PM, Monday through
Thursday and
9:30 AM - 4 PM on Friday,
during the fall and spring semesters unless the University is closed.
During the summer, beginning with Maymester, hours are
from 8:00AM to 4:00PM, Monday through Friday.
A nurse practitioner is available during the summer
for
appointments from
1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Monday
through Friday.
Student ID card
MUST be presented at each visit.
After Hours
and Weekends
Resident students are to
contact their RA or RD who will help them obtain medical care. In
an emergency, students should contact
Campus Police
who will contact emergency services for students. All
students who need non-emergency care can go to
any
Local Urgent Care Center.
No appointment is
necessary. All charges incurred are the
responsibility of the student.
Eligibility for Service
All students who are enrolled
in the current semester, who have paid tuition and fees and have documented
compliance with Winthrop University's immunization policy may use
Health Services (HS). Office visits are offered at no charge. Some
services, e.g., laboratory, pharmacy, medical supplies/procedures will incur a
minimal fee.
HS will open and close
according to Residence Life's schedule. During the summer, at the beginning of
Maymester, HS will be open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Students not taking classes
but registered for the following semester may use HS if the requirements for
immunizations, as stated above, have been met. A
$10 fee per visit will be charged. The student is responsible for any
other charges incurred. All charges are billed to the student's
account as "Health Services"
and are due upon receipt of service.
Confidentiality
All
conversations, examinations, and interviews
with students are covered by state law and ethics of confidentiality.
In emergency cases, where life or limb is threatened, the policy of
confidentiality will be governed by one of reasonableness and accepted
statutes. A student's permission must be given by written consent
before Health Services can release specific medical information or any
portion of a medical record including releases
to parents, university officials, and external agencies.

General Medical
Services
Walk - in services and
appointments are available 8:30AM - 4PM, Monday
through Friday, during the fall and spring semesters, unless the
University is closed. Basic
medical services include consultation, diagnosis, treatment and
follow-up of acute illness or injury, such as asthma,
back pain, common colds, skin
conditions, abdominal pain, headaches,
pneumonia and sexually transmitted infections.
Mandatory immunizations are available. Office
visits are offered at no charge. Some
services, e.g. laboratory, pharmacy and
medical supplies/procedures will incur a minimal fee.
All charges are billed to the student's account as "Health Services."
Allergy Injections
Students previously seen by
a physician or specialist at home may store
and receive injections at Health Services. Physician
instructions and orders must be supplied
with the serum.
Allergy Injections are given by appointment, Tuesdays 8:30 -
11:00AM and 2:00 - 4:00PM. On Fridays, 9:30 - 11:00AM and 2:00 -
4:00PM. Following injections students must remain in Health Services
for thirty minutes for observation. A minimal fee per injection is
billed to the student's account as "Health Services" on the day of
service.
Laboratory
Some routine diagnostic
laboratory tests can be performed at Health Services
for a discounted fee. Other ordered tests may be obtained
on site and sent to an outside lab with results in 24 to 48 hours.
Men's Health
Physical Examinations,
blood pressure checks, testicular exams, contraception
information, and
sexually transmitted infection testing and
treatment are available.
Laboratory, pharmacy and medical supplies/procedures will incur a
minimal fee. All charges are billed to the
student's account as "Health Services".
Pharmacy
The pharmacy,
staffed with part-time registered pharmacists and
registered pharmacy technicians, maintains a
limited inventory of prescription and over-the-counter
medications and contraceptives. Students may also have
prescriptions from other physicians filled at the pharmacy.
Medicine
pick-up times are Monday through Friday
from 4:30 PM to 5:00 PM
on the day the prescription is ordered and 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM on
subsequent days.
Student ID card MUST be presented at the time of
pick up. If a student is unable to come to Health
Services during these times, a friend may pick up the prescription for
the student. Prescriptions and over-the-counter medications
can be obtained for a
discounted fee. A small restocking fee will be
charged for prescriptions not picked up within two weeks. Please contact
us about pharmacy hours during the summer.
Travel Clinic
The Winthrop travel clinic
is a service offered to those
who plan to either travel or study abroad. We offer a pre-travel
assessment to determine your healthcare needs, information about disease risks,
as well as health information for your specific destination. Preventive
medications and vaccinations are given as needed. Call 803-323-2206 for

Women's Health
Annual
well woman
examination, blood pressure checks,
contraception information,
pap smears, and
sexually transmitted
infection testing
and treatment are available. Our
Well Woman Exam class is for women who have never had an
annual well woman exam or pelvic
exam. Female
nurse practitioners
are available, and
appointments are required. Laboratory,
pharmacy, and medical supplies/procedures
will incur a minimal fee. All charges are billed
to the student's account as "Health Services".
Visit Verification
Medical excuses are not provided by Health
and Counseling Services staff to students for missing a class. Students
are responsible for attending classes. Verification of the date of visit
can be given to the student but it is up to the individual professors to decide
whether an absence will be excused. Documentation of a visit or
illness will not be granted to a student who was not seen by Health and
Counseling Services staff. Visit documentation is only written for the
day(s) and time the
student was seen in Health and Counseling Services. Students are
responsible for scheduling visits so as to have a minimal impact on academic
requirements.
