Global Learning Initiative


 Engagement (Program & Events) Grant

Engagment (Program & Events) grants provide support for departments, programs, and student clubs and organizations, who wish to sponsor Global Learning Inititiative (GLI) events, programs, and activities. Grant request up to $500 will be considered.

Criteria for Funding

  • The proposed event, program, or activity must meet the Global Learning Initiative's definition of global: "local, regional, national, and/or international experiences that may differ from one's own culture." (Proposal, p.1)

  • The proposed event, program, or activity must be co-sponsored by at least one other department, program, student club, or student organization that pledges partial financial support; personnel to organize and publicize the event, program, or activity; or both.

  • The potential impact upon and benefit to Winthtop students of the event, program, or activity.

  • The applicant's ability to tie this event, program, or activity into other University events (i.e. Homecoming, Alumni weekend, Model United Nations, etc.), other commemorative anniversaries (i.e. Social Justice Week, International Education Week, Black History Month, etc.), or community events (i.e. Come-See-me Festival, domestic and international holidays, etc.) is a plus.

  • Likelihood that the event, program, or activity will become an approved Global Learning Cultural Event is a plus. Students are encouraged to see faculty or staff for assistance in applying for Global Learning Cultural Event approval.


  • The applicant must assume responsibility for all arrangements and publicity.

  • GLI funds must be used for expenses that are permissible University expenditures.  These expenses include, but are not limited to the following: printing and publicity expenses, travel expenses for speakers or performers, honoraria, stipends, supplies, and copyright permissions.

  • The Global Learning Initiative must be listed as a co-sponsor on all publicity, programs, and web site material related to the the event.

  • The applicant is strongly encouraged to apply for Global Learning Cultural Events approval for eligible programs, events, or activities.

  • Allocated funds must be spent by June 30, 2015.

Application Procedures

Interested applicants must submit a completed application form, budget, and budget justification to the Global Learning Initiative (GLI) Engagement Committee by the published deadlines. Funds must be spent by June 30, 2015.


April 14, 2015 by 12:00 p.m.

September 8, 2015 by 12:00 p.m.

November 10, 2015 by 12:00 p.m.

February 9, 2016 by 12:00 p.m.

April 12, 2016 by 12:00 p.m.


**Individuals or Organizations may apply for multiple GLI grants in the same academic year.
