What is Recycled . . .

Recycling bins are located in Residence Halls and Academic Buildings. The following materials can be recycled at Winthrop:

  • Mixed office paper (magazines, newspaper, telephone books, etc.)
  • Plastics with numbers 1-7 (no styrene)
  • Shredded paper (keep separate from mixed office paper)
  • Aluminum and steel cans

When recycling, look for these recycling signs:


Waste is material that will be sent to landfill and is not recyclable.

Other common recyclables at Winthrop can also be recycled on campus in select locations or by special request:

  • Corrugated cardboard (in designated dumpsters)
  • Electronics (e-waste)
  • Toner and inkjet cartridges
  • Vinyl Banners (UpcycleLife)
  • Food scraps composted (Thomson only)
Contact Chris Johnson at 323-2389 to recycle toner, inkjet cartridges, and vinyl banners. To recycle electronics, contact  Tim Hill at 323-2318.

Specialized recycling at Winthrop include the following items. These items are processed by the Office of Environmental Health and SafetyContact Mitzi Stewart for more information about the proper procedure for recycling these items.

  • Batteries used on campus
  • Smart classroom projection bulbs
  • Fluorescent lamps
  • High intensity discharge lamps
  • Lamp ballasts
  • Thermostats, switches and alarm pull stations that contain mercury
Unfortunately, Winthrop cannot accept batteries used at home.  Click on the link below to conduct a search for where to recycle batteries.

WECARE Building Representatives in each building are available to the assist the Sustainability Committee communicate more effectively when integrating sustainable practices and address issues in those buildings where a sustainable practices are not being followed.   This program also will  allow the WECARE Building Representatives to field specific questions about issues that building occupants may have in their building.  A list of WECARE Building Representatives is available that lists the volunteer in each building.

The following items CANNOT be recycled at Winthrop:

  • Styrene (Styrofoam) packaging or cups
  • Paper towels and tissues
  • Candy wrappers or chip bags
  • Trash bags
  • Ziploc bags
  • Plastic coated drink cups from fast food restaurants or coffee shops
  • Any plastic not marked with 1-7 (see bottom of plastic container for recycling number)
  • CD's or DVD's or jewel cases
  • Pizza boxes (tear top off and recycle if there is no grease contaminating the cardboard)
  • Three ring binders (remove and recycle paper contents; reuse binders or donate)
  • Food
