Recycling bins are located in Residence Halls and Academic
Buildings.
The following materials
can be recycled in common areas on campus:
- Mixed office paper, magazines
and newspaper
- Corrugated cardboard
- Telephone books
- Plastics with numbers 1-7
- Aluminum and steel cans
- Toner and inkjet cartridges
Winthrop encourages the proper
disposal of the following items:
- Batteries
- Smart classroom projection
bulbs
- Fluorescent lamps
- High intensity discharge lamps
- Lamp ballasts
- Thermostats, switches and alarm
pull stations that contain mercury
- Toner cartridges
- Computer hardware

The following items are also recycled and/or reused on
campus:
- Fryer oil from Thomson Cafe is
being converted to biodiesel through York Technical
College
- Food scraps from Thomson are
being composted on campus
- Yard and tree waste is ground
into mulch
- Central Supply has a "Buy
Recycled" program
- Contractors are encouraged to
recycle and reuse as many construction materials as
possible
- Residence halls compete in
recycling competitions
