What is Recycled . . .

Recycling bins are located in Residence Halls and Academic Buildings.  The following materials can be recycled in common areas on campus:

  • Mixed office paper, magazines and newspaper
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Telephone books
  • Plastics with numbers 1-7
  • Aluminum and steel cans
  • Toner and inkjet cartridges

Winthrop encourages the proper disposal of the following items:

  • Batteries
  • Smart classroom projection bulbs
  • Fluorescent lamps
  • High intensity discharge lamps
  • Lamp ballasts
  • Thermostats, switches and alarm pull stations that contain mercury
  • Toner cartridges
  • Computer hardware

Contact Mitzi Stewart for more information about the proper procedure for recycling these items.

The following items are also recycled and/or reused on campus:
  • Fryer oil from Thomson Cafe is being converted to biodiesel through York Technical College
  • Food scraps from Thomson are being composted on campus
  • Yard and tree waste is ground into mulch
  • Central Supply has a "Buy Recycled" program
  • Contractors are encouraged to recycle and reuse as many construction materials as possible
  • Residence halls compete in recycling competitions
