• New planned gift designated. A planned gift of more than $1.5 million from Patz Whetstone Carter ’69 and Ray Carter of Chapin, S.C., will benefit students and faculty in the Department of Design and provide support for the conservation, historic preservation and adaptive use of Winthrop space and facilities.
The Carters hope that by making a planned gift, they will inspire others to learn more about and use the variety of planned giving vehicles available.
The Carters designated that the planned garden at the south end of Scholars Walk will be named in honor of the Hardin family, whose contributions to Winthrop have been long and far-reaching. The Hardin Family Garden will open and be dedicated by the end of the year.
This is the third planned gift in excess of $1 million recently announced by Winthrop University. To learn more, contact Laurie Nortz in the Winthrop University

• Spring Phonathon underway. There are 30 student callers, ranging in class from freshman to senior, calling nightly to raise funds for the Winthrop Fund. About a third of the callers receive scholarships from Winthrop, which allows them to speak from personal experience about the importance of the Winthrop Fund.
During February, the Office of Development has made an exclusive offer. Alumni who make a gift to the Winthrop Fund can honor a favorite professor or staff member at Winthrop. The Office of Development staff will send professors and staff members a certificate, letting them know about the gift in their honor.
