• Davis family honors their son, Whit. Vivian M. Carroll Hall, the new crown jewel of Winthrop’s College of Business Administration, boasts an amazing number of high-tech amenities, among them a state-of-the-art, 195-seat auditorium.
President Anthony DiGiorgio recently proclaimed that to honor donors Elaine Whitton Davis and Eric Davis, the university will name the auditorium for Elaine’s late son, David Whitton “Whit” Inman ’93. His legacy in the business world included a career at Carroll Financial Associates, where he was a valuable and beloved member of the team. Whitton Auditorium will host the learning opportunities that were the hallmark of Whit’s time at Winthrop. A $500,000 gift from the Davises, supplemented by additional provisions in their estate plans, will create the Whitton Endowment for Business Excellence and will support activities, programs and speakers that will connect and promote synergies between the College of Business Administration and the greater Rock Hill business community.
• Think about planned giving. Life insurance can be an excellent tool for helping accomplish philanthropic goals while achieving other important financial objectives. In addition to an outright gift of an insurance policy, there is another important charitable use for life insurance. Often, an individual is strongly motivated to make a significant gift to charity, but is constrained from doing so by family considerations. “Wealth replacement” is a technique that has evolved to address this issue. For more information on making a gift of life insurance to Winthrop, contact Laurie Nortz, senior philanthropic advisor, at 803/323-4748 or nortzl@winthrop.edu.
