Pitcher Owen Reid Hopes Baseball, Travel Are in His Future
The senior mass communication major/Spanish minor said he “grew up in the game” because his father coached baseball for 20 years, and his uncle and grandfather played during their high school and college years. So it’s no surprise that Reid fell in love with the game as a child. “I’ve been playing baseball as long as I can remember,” he said, “and I want to keep playing as long as I can.” In fact, baseball brought Reid from Moberly, Mo., to Winthrop four years ago, and he hopes the game he’s played most of his life will take him even farther. After graduation, he wants to play professional baseball outside the United States, possibly in a Spanish-speaking country. Heading down this path, Reid said, would allow him to combine his love for baseball and his desire to travel and learn about other cultures. “I’d love to experience something different and play baseball at the same time,” he said. Even so, Reid, a representative for the Student Athlete Advisory Council and the Mass Communication Student Advisory Board, knows a career in baseball won’t last forever, so he hasn’t ruled out other job possibilities. “I’ve always wanted to travel and experience other cultures,” he said, “and working on a cruise ship would be an interesting way to do both.” Owen at a Glance
