Physical Activity Encouraged for a Healthy Lifestyle

Kayaking at the Chattooga River near Long Creek, S.C., and rock climbing at the West Center are among popular activities offered for Winthrop students.

Winthrop students are encouraged to stay active during their college years and to explore various sports and recreational activities.

Why? Physical activity helps relieve stress and contributes to a healthy lifestyle.

Students can earn course credit for some sports. Among the physical education courses offered this spring were archery, kayaking, snow skiing, martial arts, scuba diving, fencing, aerobic walking and rock climbing.

If students cannot work a class into their academic schedules, they always can take advantage of the West Center’s offerings in weight lifting or exercise classes such as yoga, turbo kick and aerobics in the swimming pool. Recreational services sponsors activities such as the annual West Fest and a host of tournaments, such as arena football and racquetball.

For those who prefer mental gymnastics, there are chess tournaments, poetry slam contests and foosball, among other more sedentary activities. Students who excel at Winthrop can compete against students from other universities at regional recreational contests, including one held Feb. 27-28 at East Carolina University. Winthrop’s own Angelo Jeter `08 emceed the poetry slam section.
