In recognition of Tom Slaughter’s generous $1.2 million gift for scholarships for York County students, Winthrop officials named the first-floor conference room in the Sims Science Building the Slaughter-Wilkerson Conference Room. A dedication ceremony took place on March 6. Pictured from left are David Mitchell, assistant principal of York Comprehensive High School; President Anthony DiGiorgio; Tom Slaughter, formerly of Hickory Grove, S.C., and now Charlotte, N.C.; and Diane Howell, principal of York Comprehensive High School.

• Scholars Walk Brick Campaign. Donors will help pave the path from Kinard Hall to the Sculpture Garden with bricks. Alumni support will be a permanent reminder of their partnership and involvement with Winthrop. Bricks may be purchased in honor or in memory of a classmate, professor or friend. All proceeds will benefit the Winthrop Fund, which supports student scholarships, the Winthrop Alumni Association, faculty awards and other university initiatives on an annual basis.

• Winthrop alumna establishes scholarships. Elizabeth Hope Reed `41, `51, will establish the Elizabeth Hope Reed Fellows Program through a $1.2 million charitable gift annuity and other testamentary gifts. The Elizabeth Hope Reed Fellows program will foster learning through service experience. Gift annuities provide income for the remainder of a donor’s life or a specified period of time while entrusting the remainder of the gift to Winthrop. To learn about making a legacy gift to support the Winthrop experience, contact Laurie Nortz in the Office of Development at 803/323-4748 or e-mail her at nortzl@winthrop.edu.

• D.B. Johnson Memorial Organ Fund. After many repairs and updates, the D.B. Johnson Memorial Organ is now installed. A homecoming organ festival will be held August 13-16 to celebrate the historic organ’s return. Winthrop is still accepting contributions to pay for the recent restoration. To make a gift or to inquire about the restoration project, contact J. Terrell May in the Office of Development at 803/323-3388 or e-mail him at mayj@winthrop.edu.
