Junior forward Ashley Fann scored her 1,000th point during the Jan. 26 win over Charleston Southern, 75-66. She is just the fourth player in Winthrop history to reach that mark before her senior season. Athletic Director Tom Hickman, left, and Head Coach Bud Childers presented the game ball to Fann on Jan. 30. The Lady Eagles are fighting for the top spot as regular season champions in the Big South Conference. • Scholarships in memory of Beasley. The Palmetto Dramatic Association recently established the Blair Beasley Award of Excellence in honor of the late theatre professor. Beasley, who joined the faculty in 1977 and retired in 2001, worked extensively with the association to host a festival at Winthrop for hundreds of high school students to participate in one-act plays, playwriting, costume and make-up competitions. In memory of Beasley, two $1,000 scholarships will be given to high school seniors participating in an association production. • Reginald Lloyd `89 in news again. The S.C. Senate recently confirmed Reginald Lloyd, the U.S. attorney for South Carolina, as the new State Law Enforcement Division chief. He is expected to start his new job soon. Lloyd was the first African-American selected as permanent U.S. attorney and will be the first to head SLED. Public service is important for Lloyd, who has already served as a state circuit judge, an assistant state attorney general and S.C. House attorney. The State newspaper recently profiled Lloyd. • Blow our horns. Winthrop was one of only two South Carolina schools that had students selected by audition for the TIAA-CREF All-Collegiate Jazz Ensemble, held Feb.22-24. The three students accepted were Patrick Brown, graduate student, saxophone; Christian Gordon, freshman, trumpet; and Jake Mitchell, freshman, trumpet. • Watch and listen. If you couldn’t attend Department of Music concerts last fall, we have a treat: a montage of musical performances created by L.H. Dickert, associate professor of music.
Note: The music performance file above is a .mov file type and will require Apple's free QuickTime player to view. If the montage of musical performances link does not work, please visit Apple's download site. |
