Muller '00 Markets Women's Unmentionables When Ben Muller ’00 moved from the world of nonprofits to a competitive business environment
at Hanesbrands Inc., he rose to the challenge.Muller, an integrated marketing communications major, had previously worked for nonprofits, first as a development manager for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and then as an income manager at the American Cancer Society. While pursuing his MBA, he turned a class project into a job at a global consumer goods company. During a graduate-level marketing class, Muller began a project for Wonderbra, where he analyzed the bra market, determined Wonderbra’s position, and created recommendations for marketing a new product line. He ended up as the marketing projects manager for Bali Marketing, an industry-leading brand for Hanesbrands, Inc., makers of internationally known brands, including Hanes, Champion and Wonderbra. “I actually was recruited into the company for a marketing position; it was only after I arrived that I found my good luck in being placed in Intimates,” said Muller, who lives in Winston-Salem, N.C. Muller says working for Hanesbrands, Inc. is a big change.“I went from a regional office of working with a maximum of 40 other employees to a global company with over 50,000 employees,” said Muller, a native of Greenville, S.C. “I enjoy the challenge of a more cutthroat for-profit environment, competing with other major players in apparel for the consumer’s dollar." Today Muller stays busy analyzing existing and potential product lines and assisting in promotional campaigns for Bali lines. He serves as a liaison between marketing and other departments, and he is responsible for managing business for Sears and Lane Bryant. Muller, a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and an avid fan of Winthrop athletics, credits his success to the professors in the integrated marketing communication major, namely Marilyn Sarow. He believes they provided him with the tools and drive needed to be successful. Since working for Hanesbrands, Inc., Muller is often asked about working with celebrities seen in Hanes commercials. His response: “For the record, no, I don’t know Michael Jordan or Jennifer Love Hewitt.” |
