In Rock Hill June 17-19 to participate in a Juneteenth Celebration at Mt. Prospect Baptist Church, Essie Mae Williams is welcomed to campus by Jermaine Whirl, Student Alumni Council president. The pair is pictured in the lobby of Thurmond Building, named for Williams' father, the late Senator Strom Thurmond. Williams will speak about her life and book, "Dear Senator," at 9:30 a.m. on June 18 in Tillman.

Class of '70 members Lynn Scott Friedman (left) and Kay Crocker Sehorn (right) found the perfect way to display their pride at the 2005 Alumni Reunion Celebration.

Charleston, S.C., Mayor Joe Riley told students at spring commencement that our state will be experiencing unprecedented growth. “The question to you and the question to me is what are we going to do with it? Will we direct it, shape it, use it, make South Carolina the most beautiful and successful place in America? Or will we just become a substantially paved over Anyplace U.S.A.? We have the power and we have the duty to shape it, to set the rules. It is all about excellence, embracing excellence and rejecting mediocrity in our built environment.”

Commencement in May was a touching moment for Alvaro Martinez. He was one of eight Winthrop tennis players involved in a van crash in 1993 that killed one teammate and seriously injured others. The last member of that team to graduate from Winthrop, he overcame many challenges to earn his degree.

Karl Folkens `78, incoming chair of the board of trustees, and organist Shirley Fishburne `72 and `73, joined alumni at the organ concert in May at Central United Methodist Church in Florence, S.C. Concerts are being held around the state to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Winthrop's D.B. Johnson Memorial Organ.
