Debbie Garrick '87 &
'89 hired as new director of alumni programs Debbie Garrick ’87, ’89 joined the
Office of Alumni Relations on July 1 as the new director of alumni
programs. Previously, Garrick served the university for eight years as
a consultant with the Office of Career Services. In her new position,
Garrick is overseeing a variety of alumni interest groups, including
the Winthrop Alumni Admissions Volunteers (WAAV) and the Alumni Career
Network, and supervising the Student Alumni Council.
“I am thrilled to have this position because I live and breathe my
alma mater,” Garrick said. “Winthrop is where I grew into who I am
today. So to be able to represent Winthrop in this new way is exciting
to me.”
Garrick obtained her two degrees at Winthrop—a B.A. in communications
in 1987 and an M.Ed. in counseling and development in 1989. Currently,
Garrick is beginning work on her dissertation for a doctorate of
higher education administration at Nova Southeastern University in
Florida.
The Neeses, S.C., native has received two Presidential Citations—one
in 1999, for her work as a mentor and role model for students, and one
in 2004, for designing and implementing the Emerging Leaders program
with Alicia Marstall, student life coordinator of student
organizations.

Garrick was awarded a Community Service Award in 2001 for her work
with Rock Hill’s youth and older adults and the 2000-01 M. Cristina
Grabiel Award from Dinkins Student Union (DSU) for “making the world a
better place.” DSU also awarded Garrick the 1998 Support and
Encouragement Award for going beyond the call of duty in her service
to Winthrop students. A 2001 graduate of Leadership York County,
Garrick is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor
Society.
Martie Curran, assistant vice president and executive director of
alumni relations, cited Garrick’s professional and volunteer
experience as strengths. Through her former position with Career
Services, Garrick had collaborated often with Alumni Relations on the
Alumni Career Network.
“Debbie has so many talents and valuable attributes to bring to this
position,” said Curran. “And that’s not to mention the number of hours
she’s given to the university as an alumni volunteer. Anybody who
knows Debbie truly understands the passion she feels for this
university.”
