Debbie Garrick '87 & '89 hired as new director of alumni programs

Debbie Garrick ’87, ’89 joined the Office of Alumni Relations on July 1 as the new director of alumni programs. Previously, Garrick served the university for eight years as a consultant with the Office of Career Services. In her new position, Garrick is overseeing a variety of alumni interest groups, including the Winthrop Alumni Admissions Volunteers (WAAV) and the Alumni Career Network, and supervising the Student Alumni Council.

“I am thrilled to have this position because I live and breathe my alma mater,” Garrick said. “Winthrop is where I grew into who I am today. So to be able to represent Winthrop in this new way is exciting to me.”

Garrick obtained her two degrees at Winthrop—a B.A. in communications in 1987 and an M.Ed. in counseling and development in 1989. Currently, Garrick is beginning work on her dissertation for a doctorate of higher education administration at Nova Southeastern University in Florida.

The Neeses, S.C., native has received two Presidential Citations—one in 1999, for her work as a mentor and role model for students, and one in 2004, for designing and implementing the Emerging Leaders program with Alicia Marstall, student life coordinator of student organizations.

Martie Curran, (left) assistant vice president and executive director of Alumni Relations welcomes Debbie Garrick, the new director of alumni programs.

Garrick was awarded a Community Service Award in 2001 for her work with Rock Hill’s youth and older adults and the 2000-01 M. Cristina Grabiel Award from Dinkins Student Union (DSU) for “making the world a better place.” DSU also awarded Garrick the 1998 Support and Encouragement Award for going beyond the call of duty in her service to Winthrop students. A 2001 graduate of Leadership York County, Garrick is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society.

Martie Curran, assistant vice president and executive director of alumni relations, cited Garrick’s professional and volunteer experience as strengths. Through her former position with Career Services, Garrick had collaborated often with Alumni Relations on the Alumni Career Network.

“Debbie has so many talents and valuable attributes to bring to this position,” said Curran. “And that’s not to mention the number of hours she’s given to the university as an alumni volunteer. Anybody who knows Debbie truly understands the passion she feels for this university.”
