Jazz Voices belts out win at national competition

On its first trip to the North Texas Jazz Festival, the Winthrop Jazz Voices earned top prize among university vocal jazz groups at the April event.

The annual event near Dallas in Addison, Texas, includes demonstrations and master classes by professional Grammy award winners and performances by college bands, combos and jazz vocal groups.

“We were very pleased with Winthrop’s recognition, and it was gratifying to be ranked number one,” said Robert Edgerton, director of the group and professor emeritus of music. “We felt a little like the Cinderella team. It was a fabulous experience.”

The 17-member group did a performance of cappella songs by Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, the Beatles and the Real Group.
