Winthrop Announces First Class for Athletics Hall of Fame

On Feb. 27, a ceremonial dinner is planned to honor six individuals who will be inducted into Winthrop’s first Athletics Hall of Fame class. Selected from among the nominations submitted this past year, the inductees include three former Winthrop athletes, two coaches and one athletic administrator.

“We are looking forward to this special event in the history of the university and its athletics program,” said Winthrop Athletics Director Tom Hickman. “We believe the time has come to honor the outstanding individuals who have left their mark on Winthrop’s athletics program, and to recognize the pioneers and leaders who have helped direct the successful evolution of Winthrop athletics from its years as an all-female school, to a quality NCAA Division I coeducational program,” Hickman added.

The inaugural Hall of Fame class includes: the late Lucille Ellerbe Godbold ’22, a track and field gold medallist in the 1922 Olympics; Harriet “Boots” Bandy ’58, a former high school girls’ basketball coach and a South Carolina Hall of Fame member; Mary Roland Griffin '50, Winthrop’s first athletics director; Horace Turbeville, the school’s first baseball coach; Lisa (Kemme) Raio ’91, a NCAA record-setting softball pitcher; and Bryan Link ’95, an NCAA Division I All-American pitcher.

Tickets to the Hall of Fame dinner are $20 per person and are on sale until Feb. 20. To purchase tickets, contact Sharen DuBard, director of the Eagle Club, at 803/323-2129, ext. 6218.
