Status: There is currently no emergency. Winthrop University is operating under NORMAL conditions.
- Sign up for WU Alerts using the graphic link at right. This is the single best thing students, faculty, and staff can do to ensure that they are notified of emergency situations on or near campus. If you are already signed up, use the link to ensure your contact information is up to date.
- Review the emergency contacts information, also at right. Be knowledgeable about how to immediately reach help and receive info in the event of an emergency.
- Check out the emergency handbook link at left or review personal safety tips for what you should do in a variety of emergency scenarios – from bomb threats to inclement weather to a nuclear disaster.
- Use the training resources link at left if you are interested in or have been tapped for emergency response training.
- Roll over the emergency response plans for more on how university departments respond to certain emergencies.

The beginning of a semester is a good time to remind members of the Winthrop community of our communication plans in cases of inclement weather. Please look over the following, especially if you are new to Winthrop.
First, students, faculty and staff should check their university e-mail or the university Web site, www.winthrop.edu for the most up-to-date information related to class and office schedules. Should you not have access to e-mail, the Web, or other information, call the campus alert line, 803/323-2222. Please do not call Campus Police for closing information, as this will tie up phone lines that may be needed for an emergency.
University Relations staff also will notify, as quickly as possible, the following local media outlets regarding closings and delays:

Notices also may be listed in the Herald, Charlotte Observer, and State newspapers, provided decisions to close or delay classes meet publication deadlines.
If a weather incident requires cancelling classes on a weekend, there is a separate policy for that event.
Members of the Winthrop community should use their discretion in
judging the safety of traveling to the university during periods of
inclement weather. Check the
leave policy for details to help
faculty/staff determine how inclement weather affects the work
schedule.

Faculty, staff, and students, register your cell or landline phone number today for emergency notification. This number will be used by the university for critical notifications in the event of emergencies, critical weather, or unplanned university closings.
