Status: There is currently no emergency. Winthrop University is operating under normal conditions.

As the community settles into a new semester, there are a few announcements related to emergency notification that are worth sharing. First, you will note that next to Alertus beacons on campus there are now signs that indicate nearby hazardous weather shelter locations. If the Alertus beacon goes off and indicates a weather situation, the signs provide the nearest place to gather until it is safe to resume normal activities. Secondly, you will begin to see in each Winthrop classroom emergency guidelines that will help faculty and students be engaged, proactive and effective in responding to certain classroom situations that may arise. Finally, below you will find a reminder of our communication plans when inclement weather happens to our community. Please look these over, especially if you are new to Winthrop.

First, students, faculty and staff should check their university e-mail or the university Web site, www.winthrop.edu for the most up-to-date information related to class and office schedules. Should you not have access to e-mail, the Web, or other information, call the campus alert line, 803/323-2222. Please do not call Campus Police for closing information, as this will tie up phone lines that may be needed for an emergency.

University Relations staff also will notify, as quickly as possible, the following local media outlets regarding closings and delays:

Radio: WRHI-AM (1340), WBT-AM (1110), WRHM-FM (107), WFAE-FM (90.7), WIBT-FM (96.1), WRFX-FM (99.7), WEND-FM (106.5), WKKT-FM (96.9), WLYT-FM (102.9), WSOC-FM (103)
Television: WCBL-TV (CN2), WBTV (3), WSOC-TV (9), NBC 6 (36), Fox 18

Notices also may be listed in the Herald, Charlotte Observer, and State newspapers, provided decisions to close or delay classes meet publication deadlines.

If a weather incident requires cancelling classes on a weekend, there is a separate policy for that event.

Members of the Winthrop community should use their discretion in judging the safety of traveling to the university during periods of inclement weather. Check the leave policy for details to help faculty/staff determine how inclement weather affects the work schedule.
