Reed Fellows to be created with $1.2 million gift

Rock Hill, SC - Winthrop University alumna Elizabeth Hope Reed will establish The Elizabeth Hope Reed Fellows Program through a one million dollar charitable gift annuity and other testamentary gifts. It is Mrs. Reed’s desire to provide scholarship support for students’ academic and experiential learning.

Mrs. Reed, currently of Ashville, NC, earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from Winthrop College in 1941, and later returned to earn her Master of Arts degree in Home Economics from Winthrop in 1951. Mrs. Reed went on to teach Home Economics in the North Carolina public school system for over 38 years and was among the first to teach co-educational classes in Family Life Education. Mrs. Reed also began pilot programs in child care and the dual role of wage earner and homemaker to keep pace with changing society. She has also been honored for her 50 years of membership in the American Home Economics Association. Active in her community, Mrs. Reed earned the “Quality of Life Award” from the North Carolina Chapter of the American Cancer Society for her volunteer work She and her late husband, Robert V. Reed, formerly lived in Sylva, N.C.

The purpose of the Elizabeth Hope Reed Fellows Program is to provide scholarship funds to support both academic and experiential learning. Scholarships awarded shall provide deserving students with the financial resources to allow them to achieve high academic and service-oriented goals that will revert richly back into the needs of the community, ultimately bettering our world. The necessary criteria for a student to receive consideration as a recipient in the Elizabeth Hope Reed Fellows Program shall include, but not be limited to financial need; an average of at least eight volunteer hours in approved service areas; and good academic standing at Winthrop University. Scholarships are renewable and are available to both undergraduate and graduate students. The Elizabeth Hope Reed Fellows program will further foster the learning through service experience at Winthrop University.

Gift annuities provide income for the remainder of a donor’s life or a specified period of time while entrusting the remainder of the gift to Winthrop University.
