Winthrop University:
Building and Structures Timeline
David Bancroft Johnson (1856-1928), superintendent of schools in Columbia, S.C. during the 1880s, was keenly aware of the lack of professionally trained school teachers in the state and felt strongly that a teacher training school was the answer. To establish funding for the school, Johnson went to visit Robert C. Winthrop, Massachusetts philanthropist and chairman of the Peabody Education Board. Fortunately, Mr. Winthrop shared his vision and Johnson was able to secure the $1500 needed to open the Winthrop Training School in 1886.
