Suggested Events for Off-Campus Petitions

The following represent a selection of off-campus events and locations which have provided Cultural Events credit in the past. These are events which you can assume will be approved by the committee providing you submit the appropriate materials and a well-written report. These are only suggestions and are not meant to be all-inclusive nor to eliminate other similar events.

Museums

This category may include a tour of a special traveling exhibit even if you have received credit for the regular exhibits of the museum in the past. Proof of attendance would be a receipt for admission or, if no admission is charged, a brochure.

• Dalton Gallery, Center for the Arts, Rock Hill Center for the Arts, Rock Hill, SC

• Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC

• Museum of the New South, Charlotte, NC

• Light Factory Art Gallery, Charlotte, NC

• Afro-American Cultural Center, Charlotte, NC

• South Carolina State Museum, Columbia, SC

Dance

Attendance at any dance performance by the following listed groups or types of production companies would qualify. Proof of attendance would be a ticket stub, or if free, a program.

• Professional Dance Troupes:

  • North Carolina Dance Theatre, Charlotte, NC

  • Charlotte Nutcracker Performance

• Community Dance Troupes:

  • York County Ballet Company, Rock Hill, SC

Not acceptable are dance recitals by local or area studios where the performers are primarily children.

Theatre

Attendance at any performance of a theatre production or musical by the following listed groups or types of production companies would qualify. Proof of attendance would be a ticket stub, or if free, a program.

• Professional Theatre Productions:

  • Touring Productions

  • Broadway Series

  • Theatre Charlotte

• Community Theatre Productions:

  • Rock Hill Community Theatre

  • Fort Mill Community Theatre

  • Chester Little Theatre

• College Productions

Not acceptable are high school (or any lower school) productions or church productions. Children's Theatre productions are generally not approved.

Music

Attendance at any classical or true jazz program by professional, community, or college groups. Lilith Fair would not be an approved performance, nor would a performance by Jimmy Buffett, Randy Travis, or The Rolling Stones. However performances by Wynton Marsalis or Yo Yo Ma (cello) would be approved. Any solo recitals by professional performers or sponsored by a college are acceptable. Proof of attendance would be a ticket stub, or if free, a program.

• Professional Groups:

  • Charlotte Symphony Orchestra

  • Charlotte Philharmonic Orchestra

  • Opera Carolina

  • Oratorio Singers

  • Charlotte Children's Choir

  • Youth Oratorio

  • Carolina Pro Musica

  • Lunch Time Series- downtown Charlotte

• Community Groups:

  • York County Choral Society

Not acceptable are music programs by high school (or any lower school) or church choir performances.

Other Special Events

Proof of attendance would be a ticket stub, or if free, a brochure.

• Catawba Cultural Center, Rock Hill, SC

• Historic Brattonsville

• Biltmore House, Asheville, NC

In every case, once a petition is approved (or denied) the Coordinator for Cultural Events will notify the student and will enter the approved petition(s) into the student's record. The Cultural Events Office keeps the complete petition on file for one year. After that, reports and supporting materials will be discarded, and a copy of the petition form itself is all that is retained permanently. If you submit materials that you wish to have returned please mark these clearly with your name and with "return" and make sure you come back to the office to claim them.
