Welcome to the Department of Biology
The Department of Biology at
Winthrop University features a challenging but rewarding
curriculum taught by an experienced, enthusiastic faculty.
Focusing on the student's ability to conduct research, the
biology major allows students to tailor a program to their
interest, whether they be zoological, molecular, environmental,
teacher certification, or other interests. Small classes (averaging 20-24 students in labs)
ensure that students have the opportunity to take advantage of
interaction with their instructors.
Biology Program
With more than 250 students
majoring in biology, students are assured of a wide selection of
courses. The major offers students a broad foundation in
the biological sciences. A prime focus of the program is
on acquiring the tools to conduct research, including scientific
investigation procedures. Students must complete a total
of 67 semester hours of biology-related courses. Also
available are an
18-hour biology minor and Secondary Teacher Certification in conjunction
with the Teacher Education Program in our College of Education.
Groups and Professional
Organizations
Beta Beta Beta, the national
biology honor society, is represented with a chapter on the
Winthrop campus. Its members participate in initiations,
field trips, and a variety of other activities. "Club Med"
is an organization available for students interested in
medicine, dentistry, and para-medical areas. Members hear
from Winthrop graduates in professional careers, take field
trips, receive information on national exams (MCAT, DAT, etc.),
and hear speakers from a variety of medical fields.
Internships
Internships and cooperative
studies are available and often serve as stepping-stones to
employment and entry into professional careers. Although
internships are not required for graduation, they are
encouraged. Students can earn up to three hours of
internship or co-op credit towards their biology degree.
Internships and co-ops are available at a variety of
institutions and corporations in the metro Charlotte area.
Facilities
The Biology Department moved
into a new Life Sciences Building in 1999. With the
Department of Chemistry, Physics and Geology remaining in SIMS Science Building, space for
the sciences at Winthrop has nearly doubled. Resources
available in the Life Sciences Building include: eleven
teaching laboratories, a microscopy suite for electron and
optical microscopes, a herbarium/museum room, an aquarium room,
a computer lab and a student study area/lounge.
Additionally, the university owns a 325-acre recreational area
with a large undisturbed wooded area and a 20-acre lake
available for field study and field trips.
