Big South Undergraduate Research (BigSUR)
Intercollegiate Juried Exhibition

As part of this year's Big South Undergraduate Research Conference, Winthrop University Galleries will be hosting an Intercollegiate Juried Exhibition in the Lewandowski Student Gallery, McLaurin Hall. The exhibition will run April 2 - 13, 2012. This exhibition will explore research and investigation as it relates to the visual arts. Students from a variety of disciplines will have an opportunity to display their work and achievements in the fields of art and design in an academic setting. Additionally, this exhibition will be open to regional students outside of the Big South institutions, including Appalachian State University, College of Charleston, Davidson College, East Carolina University, Mercer University, UNC Charlotte, USC Columbia, USC Upstate, Wingate University, and Wofford College. By hosting an intercollegiate exhibition of this nature, a variety of artistic perspectives will be displayed, and the achievements of students in visual art areas will be celebrated.

Entry Procedure

Entries should include the following materials:

+ Entry fee is $5, one work can be entered per student
+ Entries must be received by January 20, 2012

1) Entry form neatly printed or typed, one work can be entered per student.
2) CD which includes:
    - 3 images of one work formatted as JPEGs with a resolution of 300 dpi,
      with at least one image showing the entire work.
    - Word or PDF document with a brief artist's statement.
    - These files should be named as follows: lastname_1.jpg, lastname_2.jpg,
      lastname_3.jpg and lastname_statement.doc/pdf.
3) Self-addressed envelope with prepaid postage for CD return (if desired).
4) $5 check made out to: Winthrop University Foundation (Galleries)

+ Upon jurying the works, artists will be notified by e-mail of acceptance or rejection no later than February 6, 2012. Those artists whose work has been accepted are then responsible for shipping works to Winthrop University Galleries by February 29, 2012.
+ Maximum dimensions of work may not exceed 4' x 4' x 3' and weight cannot exceed 75 lbs.

Eligibility

Open to any currently enrolled undergraduate student of the Big South universities and colleges, as well as Appalachian State University, College of Charleston, Davidson College, East Carolina University, Mercer University, UNC Charlotte, UNC Greensboro, USC Columbia, USC Upstate, Wingate University, and Wofford College. Entries must be original works in any art or design media completed in the past 18 months.

Juror

The juror for this exhibition will be Virginia Derryberry, Professor and Chair of the Art Department at UNC Asheville. Derryberry's work has been shown in venues such as the Carnegie Museum of Art, the London Institute of Art, and the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art. Her work is included in the collections of Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport, the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, GA, and Nashville International Airport. Derryberry has also received numerous grants and fellowships, including a residency fellowship from Moulin à Nef, in Auvillar, France, in 2004, as well as an artist fellowship from the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA).

Awards and Reception

Awards will be presented at the reception from 6:30-8 p.m. on April 13, 2012. Best in Show ($200) and three Juror's Choice Awards ($100 each) will be chosen. If an artist wishes to attend the reception, he or she is responsible to pay the $100 registration fee for the BigSUR symposium. In the event that an award recipient is not present at the reception, the award will be mailed to the address listed on the entry form.

Critique/Symposium

As part of the BigSURS, there will be a critique of the accepted works on the same day as the reception, Friday, April 13, 2012. If the artist wishes to attend the critique as well as the reception, he or she will be responsible to register for the symposium and submit the $100 registration fee. Artists who fail to do so will not be able to participate in the critique or reception as these events are part of the larger conference proceedings.

Responsibilities and Disclaimers

+ Work sent to the gallery must be installation-ready. If specific installation materials are needed, this information should be included with the original entry, and those materials should be included with the shipped work with clear instructions for installation.

+ The gallery reserves the right to reject any artwork due to inadequate preparation for installation, or for potential security or public safety issues.

+ It is the responsibility of the artist to ship and insure (if desired) work to and from the gallery. Work must be packed in reusable containers. Clear shipping instructions must be included, as well as shipping labels, FedEx or UPS account number, or prepaid USPS postage.

+ All accepted work will be insured by WUG while on display.
