Opportunities for Students and/or Faculty to Present at National Meetings that Focus on Undergraduate Research

1. The National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) will be held March 29 - 31, 2012 at Weber State University in Ogden, UT. NCUR brings together undergraduates involved in scholarly and artistic activities representing a range of disciplines including creative arts, mathematics, business, social science, humanities, physical and life sciences, natural resources, and engineering, among others. Participants come from more than 300 colleges and universities representing almost every state in the nation. The deadline for abstracts for student presenters is November 15, 2011.

2. The English Department at Winthrop will be sponsoring the 7th Annual Undergraduate/Graduate Research Conference in February 2012. Papers on topics related to British, world, and American literature; essays on linguistics, literary and rhetorical theory, and writing pedagogy; and creative fiction and nonfiction pieces will be presented. 3. Big SURS 2011 will be held April 13-14 at TBA. The BigSURS is modeled after the NCUR meeting, but provides a less expensive alternative to NCUR. The abstract submission deadline is February 4, 2011. Special funding from the Vice President of Academic Affairs will be available to support students attending the BigSURS. The submission information and guidelines can be found on TBA. More information about student and faculty mentor travel funding for this conference will be available through the Undergraduate Research Office in the near future.

 

4. Posters on the Hill In the Spring of 2012 the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) will host its 16th annual undergraduate poster session on Capitol Hill. This event will help members of Congress understand the importance of undergraduate research by talking directly with the students whom these programs impact.

CUR Dialogues 2011

CUR Dialogues 2011 will be held February 23-25, 2012 at the TBA in Washington D.C.  CUR Dialogues is designed to bring faculty and administrators to Washington, D.C. to interact with federal agency program officers and other grant funders.
Workshops and Plenary Sessions will:
· tell participants about grant opportunities in research and education, both new and ongoing;
· assist faculty learn how to find new funding opportunities;
· assist faculty develop grant proposal writing skills.
Participants will:
· meet in small groups and talk with program officers and grants management officers -- NSF, NIH, NEH, NEA, Dept. of Energy, Dept. of Ed, and more;
· take the opportunity to communicate directly with program officers and grants administrators concerning grant requirements and funders’ priorities;
· share ideas with colleagues.
In addition, CUR Dialogues provides a setting for funders to learn of the interests, needs, and concerns of researchers and educators relative to funding opportunities. CUR Dialogues has spawned many ideas for grant programs, and have helped agencies to refine their program guidelines.
