INBRE
The goal of the IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE)
is to increase the National Institute of Health (NIH) research capacity
of the state by programmatic expansion and networking of research
activities of faculty and students at academic institutions throughout
the state."

SURE
For 8-10 weeks, undergraduate students will have the opportunity to
pursue research projects in biology, chemistry, and biochemistry under
faculty mentors. Students will receive a living stipend and will
be working on their projects from mid-May to mid-August. Click

Highlights
The
2010 Undergraduate Scholars' Book of
Abstracts - an opportunity for students who have presented or
published work in the 2009-2010 school year to have their abstracts
published in an official Winthrop publication. Submissions are now
being accepted; the deadline is in March of 2010.

The Undergraduate Research Reception will be
held in April of 2010. The office of Undergraduate Research
recognizes scholars annually at this celebration. Click

Winthrop's McNair Scholars Program
includes a summer research experience, spring break
service learning, coursework and advising to prepare participants for
successful completion of graduate degrees. Federal funding is
provided each year to help 25 first-generation, low-income and/or
under-represented undergraduates prepare for and succeed in graduate

The Janice Chastain Houk Award for
Undergraduate Research
was created in 2007 by her husband and sons to honor her life and
memory. Two rewards will be presented annually, one to a Biology
student and one to a Political Science student. Click

Posters on the Hill
In the Spring of 2010 the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) will
host its 14th annual undergraduate poster session on Capitol Hill. This
event will help members of Congress understand the importance of
undergraduate research by talking directly with the students whom these
programs impact. For more

The
Council on Undergraduate Research hosts a Registry of
Undergraduate Researchers. The purpose of this registry is to facilitate
matchmaking between undergraduates who have research experience and a
desire to pursue an advanced degree, with graduate schools seeking high
quality students who are well prepared for research. The Registry is
open to students and graduate schools in the fields of Chemistry,
Biochemistry, Biology, Physics/ Astronomy, Mathematics/Computer Science,
Economics, Geosciences, Engineering, Psychology, Sociology, Humanities
and Anthropology/Archaeology.

Conferences/Symposiums
ON CAMPUS
The English Department at Winthrop
is sponsoring the 5th annual graduate and
undergraduate conference Saturday, February 27, 2010 in 401 Withers.
There will be a call for abstracts in the near future, so check
frequently for updates.

OFF CAMPUS
The National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR)April
15-17, 2010, will be held at
University of Montana.
NCUR® 2010 will bring together undergraduates involved in scholarly and
artistic activities representing a range of disciplines including
creative arts, mathematics, business, social science, humanities,
physical and life sciences, natural resources, and engineering, among
others. Participants are expected to come from more than 300 colleges
and universities representing almost every state in the nation.

2010 Big SURS Conference
will be hosted by Radford University April 9-10th, 2010. More info

The Humanities Undergraduate Research Conference will
be held
February 19-20, 2010, at Coker College in Hartsville, SC. They
welcome electronic proposals, either 250-word abstracts or finished
papers addressing any topic of interest to English, Spanish,
Latin-American, Art History, and Communications scholars. The conference
may include sessions on a range of subjects within many fields.
