Welcome to the Office of Undergraduate Research.  The Winthrop University Undergraduate Research
Initiative (WUURI) supports a student-centered learning environment that fosters student research,
scholarship, and creative activities. The Initiative encourages students and faculty mentors to
collaborate in the design and implementation of projects and the dissemination of results.

 Opportunities

INBRE                                          The goal of the IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) is to increase the National Institute of Health (NIH) research capacity of the state by programmatic expansion and networking of research activities of faculty and students at academic institutions throughout the state."  SC-INBRE website: http://www.scepscoridea.org/inbre/

SURE                                           For 8-10 weeks, undergraduate students will have the opportunity to pursue research projects in biology, chemistry, and biochemistry under faculty mentors.  Students will receive a living stipend and will be working on their projects from mid-May to mid-August.  Click here for more information.

Internships in Plant Biology Research                               Internship stipend:  $4,950.  More information about the 2010 internship is coming soon.  Click here for more info and to apply online.

Highlights

The 2010 Undergraduate Scholars' Book of Abstracts -  an opportunity for students who have presented or published work in the 2009-2010 school year to have their abstracts published in an official Winthrop publication.  Submissions are now being accepted; the deadline is in March of 2010.  Click here for more information and a link to the submission form.

The Undergraduate Research Reception will be held in April of 2010.  The office of Undergraduate Research recognizes scholars annually at this celebration.  Click here for more information.

Winthrop's McNair Scholars Program includes a summer research experience, spring break service learning, coursework and advising to prepare participants for successful completion of graduate degrees.  Federal funding is provided each year to help 25 first-generation, low-income and/or under-represented undergraduates prepare for and succeed in graduate school.  Click here for more information.

The Janice Chastain Houk Award for Undergraduate Research was created in 2007 by her husband and sons to honor her life and memory.  Two rewards will be presented annually, one to a Biology student and one to a Political Science student.  Click here for more information on the Political Science department's award, and here for the Biology department's award.  To see past winners and receive more information click here.

Posters on the Hill                                            In the Spring of 2010 the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) will host its 14th annual undergraduate poster session on Capitol Hill. This event will help members of Congress understand the importance of undergraduate research by talking directly with the students whom these programs impact.  For more information, please visit  http://www.cur.org/pohcall.html

 

The Council on Undergraduate Research hosts a Registry of Undergraduate Researchers. The purpose of this registry is to facilitate matchmaking between undergraduates who have research experience and a desire to pursue an advanced degree, with graduate schools seeking high quality students who are well prepared for research. The Registry is open to students and graduate schools in the fields of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Physics/ Astronomy, Mathematics/Computer Science, Economics, Geosciences, Engineering, Psychology, Sociology, Humanities and Anthropology/Archaeology.

 

 

 

Conferences/Symposiums  

ON CAMPUS

The English Department at Winthrop is sponsoring the 5th annual graduate and undergraduate conference Saturday, February 27, 2010 in 401 Withers.  There will be a call for abstracts in the near future, so check frequently for updates.

Click here for highlights and pictures from the 2009 conference!  Papers were presented on topics related to British, world, and American literature, as well as essays on linguistics, literary and rhetorical theory, or writing pedagogy. 

OFF CAMPUS

 

The National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR)April 15-17, 2010, will be held at University of Montana.  NCUR® 2010 will bring together undergraduates involved in scholarly and artistic activities representing a range of disciplines including creative arts, mathematics, business, social science, humanities, physical and life sciences, natural resources, and engineering, among others. Participants are expected to come from more than 300 colleges and universities representing almost every state in the nation.  http://www.ncur.org

 

Big SURS 2010

The 2010 Big SURS Conference
will be hosted by Radford University April 9-10th, 2010.  More info coming soon.  Check this link frequently for updates.

 

The Humanities Undergraduate Research Conference will be held 
February 19-20, 2010, at Coker College in Hartsville, SC.  They welcome electronic proposals, either 250-word abstracts or finished papers addressing any topic of interest to English, Spanish, Latin-American, Art History, and Communications scholars. The conference may include sessions on a range of subjects within many fields.  Click here for more info.
